Meet Suzie and Curt Boyd who both came from large families with eleven siblings and step-siblings. They credit Aurora Public Schools with providing individual attention and structure that is so meaningful when you are from a large family.  Sports in APS for Curt provided numerous role models for him, especially after losing his father as a child.  The coach and P.E. teacher at Hinkley, Mr. Hinton, had a profound impact, helping him to receive a college football scholarship and teaching him life lessons that have helped him throughout his life.  Meanwhile, Suzie helped care for a severely disabled brother through middle and high school and recalls fondly several teachers, including Ms. Hagemeister, Mr. Hamilton, and Mrs. Grossman, who were influential in her life as she was transferring to a new high school and becoming less shy and more confident.

After meeting in high school, Suzie attended classes at Western State College and Colorado State University.  Curt attended the University of Wyoming on a football scholarship and graduated in 1976 with a degree in Math Education.  Curt came back to Aurora in the fall of 1976 to student teach at Hinkley High School.

Curt used his roofing experience from a high school job to later start working for a local roofing contractor when the teaching market was difficult.  Four years later Curt and Suzie started Academy Roofing together in Aurora in 1980.  They were young, new enthusiastic small business owners who used their skills as good judges of people, problem solvers, and continuous learners along with the perseverance, courage, and integrity needed to own your own business.

Through the years, Curt and Suzie have served on several industry boards and make time for community service projects, such as Rebuilding Together, Habitat for Humanity, and the “Backpack” program at St. Therese School.  They are especially proud though of the work they and their employees have accomplished together at the business and in serving the community.  Academy Roofing is award-winning in its industry, has been located in Aurora for 32 years and has grown to over 120 employees in the residential and commercial markets.  They continue to value education with all upper managers holding a college degree and every employee holds a high school diploma or equivalent.

All of Suzie’s brothers and sisters graduated from Aurora Public Schools, including her brother, former Governor Bill Ritter.  They all have found success in their own ways and each could name APS teachers who were instrumental in improving their lives as they did for Curt and Suzie.
